United Airlines Cancellation & Safety Review
United has always been strong at branding. So it’s no surprise its COVID-19 operational changes are distinctly branded, with some bold announcements.
The airline has launched United CleanPlus, efficiently partnering with Clorox and Cleveland Clinic to direct its new cleaning, health, and safety procedures on board.
United also requires passengers to complete a health self-assessment at check-in, and enforces mask wearing on board, potentially banning those passengers who don’t comply.
United does operate full flights, which prevents social distancing on board. It does notify passengers on flights over a certain capacity in advance and allows them to reschedule for no change fees.
Operationally, United sanitizes aircraft with electrostatic spraying before most flights. It’s providing passengers hand sanitizer wipes at boarding. And it has temporarily shut down older self-service kiosks, requesting passengers scan mobile boarding passes.
United is also piloting a new touchless kiosk check-in, which includes baggage checking in Chicago O’Hare (ORD), Boston (BOS), Dallas Fort-Worth (DFW), and Orlando (MCO). The kiosk simply requires you to scan a mobile boarding pass and it automatically prints your baggage tags.
